KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 ― Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today appeared to back the actions of youths who had waved the Sang Saka Malaya flag instead of the national flag, Jalur Gemilang, at a public countdown to the 55th National Day here.
The PKR de facto leader pointed out that Sang Saka Malaya was part of the nation’s history.
“Sang Saka (Malaya), according to these youth’s interpretation, should be introduced because this is also one of... the flags that was proposed by those who had fought for the nation (pejuang-pejuang bangsa),” Anwar told reporters today.
“What’s wrong with the younger generation knowing history, knowing Sang Saka?”
Leaders from the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition had alleged that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) intended to change the country’s national flag, a claim the opposition pact immediately denied.
Today, Anwar also pointed out that Umno’s party flag was originally named Sang Saka Bangsa.
A blogger had admitted that he had waved the “alternative” flag at Dataran Merdeka last Thursday, but said it was intended to educate the public about the nation’s history.
