CCM head to Malay groups: Why should I resign?

Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM) chief executive officer Mohd Naim Daruwish has hit back at certain Malay groups for demanding his resignation for his apparent failure to act against human rights NGO Suaram.

Over the past few days, the mainstream media has given much space to Malay groups such as Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) and Perkasa, which have called on Mohd Naim to resign.

NONEMohd Naim (right) was grilled earlier today by journalists from the Malay-language press, at a press conference held by Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

“JMM, Perkasa and others have been asking me to resign for four consecutive days, but the matter is not (within) CCM’s scope,” he said.

“I think the calls for me to resign are very irresponsible. Why should I resign when I do my job properly?”

‘Please do some research’

Mohd Naim also said the groups should do some research to understand the issue before making such comments.

He explained that the CCM could only investigate the financial situation of Suara Inisiatif Sdn Bhd, a company said to be "linked" to Suaram.

However, he stressed, the commission could not investigate Suaram, as an NGO could only be probed by the Registrar of Societies.

“As the minister said, please do some research. It is very damaging to the CCM’s image (with) some parties (even saying) we are no longer relevant,” he added.
NONEOn Aug 31, Utusan Malaysia quoted JMM president Azwanddin Hamzah(left) as saying that the CCM had failed to act on the group's allegations that had been made on July 1.
Azwanddin said according to CCM records, Suaram was registered as a company under the name of Suara Inisiatif Sdn Bhd, with RM2 paid-up capital.
He had urged Suaram to clarify its doubtful status as a NGO because a check with the CCM had shown that it was a private company earning nearly RM500,000 in 2009 and more than RM400,000 in 2010.

On Sept 1, a New Strait Timesreport quoted Perkasa information chief Ruslan Kasim blaming the commission for remaining silent after JMM's revelations.

"This will make the people think that (the CCM) is not an effective organisation in handling such matters," Ruslan is quoted as saying.
