'Death threats' for pro-M polls candidates at UKM

The families of six Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) pro-Mahasiswa candidates have claimed to have received calls threatening the lives of the students if they do not pull out of the ongoing campus polls.

According to Pro-Mahasiswa spokesperson Ahmad Afif Zulkifli, the candidates said the calls had been made since this morning.

"Their families received calls from a private number from an unknown person starting at dawn. Some have also been threatened with kidnapping," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby.

He said the calls were made to the families who live in Penang, Kedah, Selangor, Malacca, Perlis and Kelantan.

Ahmad Afif said that, so far, two police reports have been lodged in Selangor and Kedah.

When contacted, police in Sungai Tiang, Kedah, confirmed receiving a complaint, but said they could not disclose the contents.
“We will make a complaint with the UKM campus elections committee tomorrow,” Ahmad Afif said, adding that the calls were made from a private number.

According to UKM’s Ikatan Studi Islam president Mohd Azan Safar, the anonymous caller had told the candidates’ families that they will be “killed if they do not withdraw from the polls”.

He said that a candidate’s family in Penang also alleged that they were visited by someone claiming to be a police officer who was asking details about the candidate.

Worst-ever campus polls?
Ahmad Afif said that besides the threats, the banners of candidates have also been splashed with paint and claims to have evidence of alleged tampering by university officials.

“We urge the vice-chancellor of student affairs Othman A Karim to verify these claims,” he said.

NONEAlso accompanying the students was PAS’ Padang Terap MP Nasir Zakaria (right), who cited his experience contesting in campus polls and said that it is “common” for families to be “visited” and asked about the candidate.

“But I've never heard of death threats being issued before,” he said.

He added that this makes the campus polls “the worst” to date, speculating that this is because of the proximity between the general election and the campus polls.

Nasir said that campus polls result is a good indicator of the results of the general polls.

Pro-Aspirasi, a largely pro-establishment coalition in campus politics, scored landslide victories in Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia (UteM) dan Universiti Tun Hussein Malaysia (UTHM), which held polls on Sept 20.

Students at 15 other campuses, including UKM, will cast their votes tomorrow.
