EC: Photo stomping heinous, unconstitutional

The Election Commission has come down hard on the act of stepping on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's photograph during the Aug 30 Janji Demokrasi rally, describing it as heinous, unconstitutional and undemocratic.

kuala terengganu parliament by election spr ec announcement 051208 wan ahmad wan omarDisrespect against the prime minister, EC deputy chairperson Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said, is a violation of democratic process because the head of government is elected democratically, through a general election.

"I feel they not only don't understand what parliamentary democracy is... it also reflects heinous (kurang ajar) and uncivilised culture, and it is very much against the (Rukunegara principles of) Upholding the Constitution and Good Behaviour and Morality.

"If this is (the culture of) leaders of political parties who believe in democracy but allow their supporters to practise such acts, what more we can say during a general election," Wan Ahmad is quoted as saying in an interview with Utusan Malaysia today.

He accused the organisers of Janji Demokrasi of "hiding their hands after throwing stones" and described their actions as "just full of political agenda".

"They should be summoned back to school (to study) again," he said.
'In the West, they only step on pictures of rapists'

There is no country in the world, Wan Ahmad declared, where supporters of defeated political parties stomp on the photograph of the head of government.

Even in Western countries, he said, their people only step on photographs of rapists and murderers but not good leaders.

"In the West, there is no issue of replacing their national flag. To the most extent, they burn the flag but still that is their flag...

"Therefore I want to ask, where are the leaders or chiefs who hide behind the NGOs that organised the rally? Why are they not speaking out?" he asked.

Wan Ahmad stressed that disgruntlement should be voiced through the ballot box.

The Malay daily also reported that the flag dubbed Sang Saka Malaya, which had been raised during Janji Demokrasi rally, was spotted in some places in Selangor.

Quoting a blog, www.sel13.com, Utusan reported that the flag was seen displayed in Damansara, Subang and Shah Alam since last week, and it is believed that these were put up by pro-opposition activists.
