FATAL ROAD ACCIDENTS FREQUENT IN SABAH

IT HAS become a public concern over the frequent fatal road accident in Sabah and the casualty rate is alarmingly high. This follows after the fatal road accident happened in the Jalan Sulaman on the 16th shortly before midnight where 5 people died on the spot and 3 other seriously injured. The accident involved 5 cars and believed to be caused by a car flown across and over from the other opposite lane of the highway.

KK MP Hiew King Cheu said he was on site after the accident occurred, and he saw the tragedy which he felt sad and with deep regrets. The accident would not had happened if the road divider is provided with barriers, bushes, earth bans, steel crash barriers and any other form of crash protectors. The lost control car could have been stopped by the barriers and would not hit the cars on the other side.
Hiew wants the JKR and the Ministry of Works to really look into the road design, safety precautious measures, and all the relevant matters to keep our roads safe. The authorities should not pretend that the accident has nothing to do with them and it is the fault of the drivers alone.

There are many danger spots on our roads in Sabah and these are the dead-traps where potential fatal road accidents can happen anytime. There were many fatal accidents had happened in many parts of Kota Kinabalu City, and in some places there is not only one but many rounds of accident had happened.

The typical example is the dangerous roundabouts in the city where cars always hit the roundabout and damaged with casualties. The common ones are the one in Sepanggar, Towering/Penampang, Inanam/Kiansom, Menggatal/Pulutan, and even in the town centre.

There is also the problem on not enough road lights and water pounding on the road surface which also contributed to serious road accidents. A slight slip can be fatal on the dangerous road.

It is a big suffering to the family who had lost their love ones, and who should be responsible. The bad condition of the road is of course of importance in all cases of accidents. This can be attributed to the design, construction, maintenance, facilities installed, safety features provided and behavior of the drivers.

The majority of the accidents are of course due to the human factors and their carelessness. In all case, the authorities must be seen to provide maximum cares and attention to avoid road accident happening.
Many danger spots in Sabah are needed immediate attention but very unfortunately although being informed, there is still no action taken by the authorities to rectify or make good. More road accidents will surely reoccur in these danger spot. Thus, we wish the authorities can come in to do some work to save lives.

  1. For me this case the factor is the driver itself not follow the rule already set.

    3. Fatal road crash usually happens when both front and back drivers are not careless.
