Four held during Talam debate for carrying weapons

Four youths have been arrested during the Talam debate last night for carrying weapons in public.

When contacted, Cheras OCPD Mohan Singh Tara Singh said the youths, aged 21 to 25, were found behaving suspiciously.

“We could not identify which group are they from, but they were arrested for behaving suspiciously,” he told Malaysiakini.

The youths are being investigated under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 after they were allegedly found carrying two retractable batons, a knife and a metal bangle in public.

NONEThe offence is non-bailable and is punishable by a jail term not exceeding two years and whipping upon conviction.

Mohan Singh said the investigations are still ongoing, but the four may be charged or remanded tomorrow.

It is not known whether they are connected to the alleged assault on Rawang assemblyperson Gan Pei Nei, who lodged a police report saying that she was kicked as she was leaving the hall.

A scuffle broke out between pro-MCA and pro-Pakatan Rakyat supporters just prior to the start of the debate at 8.30pm, when four representatives representing Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim walked out.

They left with their supporters, about 200-strong, because they not allowed to represent Khalid to debate Deputy Agriculture Minister Chua Tee Yong, amid boos and jeers of some 500 MCA supporters.
