Komtar rep's car damaged, Penang cops to get bill

Claiming that his official car had been vandalised by several protestors last night, the DAP’s Komtar assemblyperson Ng Wei Aik has threatened to send the bill for repairs to the Penang police.
NONEThis, he said, is because they had failed to respond to two distress calls made at 8.33pm and 9.15pm.
A police patrol car only arrived 40 minutes later, he claimed, when the Jalan Pattani station is just several metres down the road from the location of the incident - outside the venue of the state DAP Hari Raya open house.
Ng, who is also Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s political secretary, alleged that there were special branch officers around but that they did not do anything to help ease the situation.
The protestors allegedly comprised some 20 hawkers who claimed that they have been deprived of doing business at Padang Kota Lama because their applications for licences have been rejected by the Penang municipal council (MPPP).
They turned emotional, shouting for their demands to be heard by Lim and hitting cars carrying state government officials as they were leaving the venue.
NONE"They damaged my vehicle which is a public asset. I will send the bill to the police, to protest their failure to protect the public," Ng told a press conference today.
"There are scratches on my car. Two or three protestors jumped on my car and squashed the hood. They even hit a volunteer security personnel.”
When Ng called the police the second time, he asked if they were “sleeping on the job and earning their salaries blindly".
"What if people were injured or had died? (Would the police take responsibility) for that? Isn't it their responsibility to protect the public?”
‘Perkasa members involved’
Penang municipal councillor Tahir Jalaluddin Hussain, met at the venue, had claimed that the group was backed by Umno, Perkasa and 1Malaysia groups.
Ng too laid the blamed on Perkasa, saying he had recognised some of its members in the crowd
NONE“Why are (the police) so afraid of Perkasa? Where is their dignity and professionalism? I hold Georgetown OCPD Gan Kong Meng responsible for this, as he failed to do his job,” he said.
"I made eight calls to the police (in all), two during the incident, and six calls afterwards to scold them. I will ask my assistant to lodge a police report soon.”
He also demanded that Gan arrest those responsible for damaging his car within 24 hours or resign.

He urged the MPPP to lodge a report and told the police to charge those found responsible for causing damage.
"The most important thing is to solve the people's issues, not ignore these ...," Shaik Hussein (left) said when contacted.
"The problems of hawkers have to be solved by DAP as soon as possible. The chief minister should not ignore the welfare (of the poor), especially (petty) traders.”
