KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 — Flash floods after a heavy downpour yesterday caused some 600 students and 23 teachers from two schools in Taman Sri Serdang near here to be stranded.
The two-hour downpour that started at 4.30pm yesterday caused monsoon drains in Taman Sri Serdang to overflow and inundate the surrounding areas with waters as high as 1.5 metres.
About 100 cars belonging to residents of the housing estate and 30 cars of teachers of Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Serdang and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sri Indah became submerged in the incident.
Checks by Bernama found the teachers and students of the afternoon sessions of the two schools were trapped at them for almost three hours.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director Mohd Sani Harul told Bernama that operations were underway to assist the victims.
He said flash floods also struck in Seri Kembangan, Jalan Serdang Jaya and Kajang.
Taman Sri Serdang Khalid neighbourhood watch head Khalid Lambak, meanwhile, told Bernama that the floods began to recede at 7pm.
Federal traffic spokesman said flash floods caused a 15-kilometre jam from the city in the direction of Seremban at 5.30pm.
He said the situation was caused because flash flooding at KM305 of the North-South Expressway forced the closure of southbound traffic.
He added that the lanes could only be reopened after the water subsided. — Bernama
