Six agencies to meet over Suaram

Six government agencies will meet tomorrow to discuss the status of human rights watchdog Suaram, who has been accused of financial irregularities.

The six agencies are Companies Comission Malaysia (CCM), Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Comission (MCMC), Bank Negara, Registrar of Societies (ROS), the police and Home Ministry.
The meeting will take place at the CCM headquarters tomorrow morning.
According to Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the agencies will establish the respective jurisdiction of various agencies in dealing with Suaram and its vehicle Suara Inisiatif Sdn Bhd.

"They will discuss who has what powers and which agency can investigate which matter," he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.
Ismail Sabri said CCM had limited jurisdiction under the Companies Act but was under pressure from the public to disclose what action it would take against Suaram and Suara Inisiatif Sdn Bhd.

"Even though it is not our jurisdiction the people want to know what action we are taking," he said, pointing out that Jaringan Melayu Malaysia had demanded CCM's chief executive officer Mohd Naim Daruwish to resign for being "silent" over the matter.
'Suaram should be open to criticism'

Commenting on calls by Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) to cease attacking Suaram, Ismail Sabri said the Malaysia was a democracy and thus Suaram should be open to criticism.

"This is a democratic country, how can they (Suaram) slam everybody including the prime minister in their statement but when people slam them they ask not to do so. That is not right.

"If you slam people, people can slam you, it's fair," he said.

Suaram, one of the most prominent human rights group in Malaysia, is being probed by the federal government over alleged financial irregularities and receipt of foreign funds.

However, the group claims that it is being persecuted for its role in initiating the French probe on the alleged corruption involving Malaysia’s purchase of two French submarines.
ROS: Suaram not registered with us
In a related development, Bernama reports that the ROS has confirmed that Suaram is an unregistered organisation.

In a press release this afternoon, ROS said its records showed Suaram was not on its register and neither had it applied for registration.

According to the statement, to register under the Societies Act 1966, Suaram would have to fulfil certain conditions spelled out under the Act, among them the address of the place of its operations, that it must have at least seven members, those on fee collection and articles of association.

A registered society must also hold annual general meetings and furnish statements of financial accounts within 60 days of the AGM, its added.
