Time we got back a safer Malaysia

If you're MARAH about all the robberies, rapes, snatch thefts and abductions, please be proactive and take action.
FEATURE
MARAH (Malaysians Against Rape, Assault & snatcH) would like to thank FreeMalaysiaToday for reaching out and offering to collaborate with us in making Malaysia a safer place for all via this column. Our inaugural article will explain our reasons for setting up Malaysia’s first cyber NGO.
The safety of a country’s citizens is our right. Each time they go out, our females shouldn’t have to mentally and physically prepare themselves in the event their car window gets smashed by a passing motorbike and their handbag snatched, or they get assaulted and robbed at a mall car park or even abducted and raped. Heck, we’re not even safe in our own homes anymore.
While MARAH appreciates the fact that the government has reduced crime from 177,520 cases in 2010 to 157,891 last year, that’s still a lot of people who have been victims of crime and have suffered unfairly.
Thanks to social media, we see the faces and the gory injuries, read the horrifying stories and feel the trauma that each of these people has gone through on Facebook and other digital media channels.
Isn’t it time we got our Malaysia back?
Car park crimes have become extra sensitive in Malaysia, bringing back to mind the infamous Canny Ong case in Bangsar. The mystery and her horrific murder left many Malaysians angry.
Such anger has undoubtedly returned with the latest car park attacks. Women’s groups and the police are issuing safety advisories on how to handle such situations. This is seriously getting out of hand and car park managements must reclaim ownership of their own car parks.
So what can you do as an ordinary Malaysian? You can join us and help spread our message. If you’re MARAH about all the robberies, rapes, snatch thefts and abductions, please be proactive and take action.
Collective voice
Sign our petition to lobby for safety. Read our documents in the “files” section to inform yourself of our activities. Wear our picbadge on your profile. Use our banner on your pages. Follow our tweets @MARAH4safety and use our hashtag #MARAH4safety but most importantly, get everyone you know to join us. We need the numbers to make our collective voice heard and reclaim ownership of a safer Malaysia for all.
MARAH aims to lobby for the safety of our daughters, sisters, mothers, aunts, girlfriends and wives. We will name names. We will post pictures of the perpetrators. We will follow court cases and post pictures of perpetrators who are successfully prosecuted into our hall of shame.
By establishing MARAH on Facebook, we aim to create a platform to share not only information, safety tips, provide warning on hot crime areas and a support group for victims but also to set up a 24/7 real-time crime watch portal for crime prevention, crime hotspots and pattern detection to tip off the police and residents in affected areas.
We have started an online petition to acquire 100,000 signatures to lobby for better safety measures and intend to hand copies over to both the Selangor state and federal governments.
We also intend to create extensive media coverage of our safety concerns. If necessary, we will launch a media campaign to drive the point home to the general public about the importance of safety issues.
MARAH is strictly a non-religious, non-political colour blind safety campaign-driven group, with no outside influence. Membership will be approved if you agree to comply with our group terms and conditions. Members are encouraged to contribute ideas, suggestions and to participate in our various forums actively.
